Week In Review

Bomomo – A non-intuitive, Javascript based drawing program. It is hard to maneuver (This image is supposed to be the replicator “R”), but it creates nice, unique, Pollock-esqe images with little or no skill required. A great example of beautiful designs, made possible (and fun) with an intelligent design tool.

Ponoko Jewelry Design Challenge – Ponoko is running a 10-day summer jewelry design contest. In promoting the challenge, Ponoko highlighted some gorgeous laser-cut pieces by molly m designs.

Sporepedia – A week after the creature creator was released, users had designed more than a million little critters using their intuitive 3D design tool. This page collects them all. Already it is possible to see the diversity of creation that can be achieved with intelligently designed (or perhaps highly evolved) tools.

Scientific American has a neat slide show featuring five 3D printers*. It is a nice pictorial overview of some of the technology that is becoming available to interested laypeople. What is striking is the similarity of the Fab@Home device (pictured) with another homebrew technology…

*Nerd Alert: The Craftsman CompuCarve is not technically a 3D printer, as it subtracts material to create the desired form rather than adding it and would more properly be classified as a CNC tool.
