Customized GI Joe’s – Your Face on Destro’s Body

by Joseph Flaherty on December 3, 2008

Every male born after 1980 that I speak with about 3D printing asks if you can have your face scanned, printed out, and added to an action figure. Currently, the answer is an unfortunate no. Existing 3D printers don’t have the resolution or color capability to print at a small scale in high quality, though that day seems to be approaching.

It is not to say experiments aren’t under way. Hasbro and the action figure magazine ToyFare teamed up at a recent comic book convention to make this generational dream a reality. Four lucky winners were selected and had their faces scanned using a 3D body scanner. This data was sent to artists at Hasbro who sculpted the faces from clay and produced customized figurines with bonus packaging and their own file cards.

Hopefully this is just a pilot for a much larger program and we will all soon have the opportunity to be immortalized as 3.75″ warriors.

  • The winners of the contest are so lucky to have such personalized trophies! It has been a long time dream of mine to have my face added to an action figure's head, especially Cloud from FFVII! Finally, that day seems to be near.
  • So I could make "G.I. Jenn" ????
  • Hi,

Did you try the new Zcorp 650 3d color printer/ We have been succesful in printing full color models for architecure but also complete faces.

  • Rene, I have not had the chance to try out the ZCorp 650 yet, but it does look impressive. From the hi-res images I've seen on their site, it still seems like the grainy finish is part of the product unfortunately. I'm a big fan, but they've got a vays to go before displacing Hasbro or Mattel!
  • all they need is He-man. cmon Mattel!
  • Haha, I'm thinking old school Kenner Star Wars Figures, put a whole new spin on the Darth Vader reveal. He-Man does deserve credit for creating the first scratch and sniff figure though.
  • MMMmmmmm, he-man toys, smells... delicious. but who create the first scratch
n' sniff 3D printer technology, huh huh? zcorp's got my vote. "Print your
pinions in full color! with that full greasy smell!"
