Every company that offers customized products provides a way for the customer to specify their design, usually via a web based interface. This toy, the “Ben 10 Alien Creation Chamber” provides a more tangible customization experience. You stock it with action figure components (arms, legs, torsos, and heads), twist knobs to select each piece and turn a dial to bring all the body parts together creating a custom alien that literally springs out of device.
It has received fairly poor reviews on Amazon due to build quality, but is a fun demonstration of how the customization process can be incorporated into the overall product experience. NIKE expanded their customization offering by creating an invitation only boutique to compliment their web based design tools. For many product categories physicality will be a critical aspect of the customer decision making process. Optimizing tools for the physical world will be a new challenge and another opportunity for innovation.
