Project Excitebike is a great example of what I call “hobby product development”. The creator of PE  put together this aftermarket system that turns your existing exercise bike into a video game controller. Why? For the fun of it, partly for skill building and if profit comes, great.

It is a simple product that connects your XBOX and exercise bike. Want your in game motorcycle to move faster? Pedal harder. A video demo shows it in action.

Even if you aren’t enthusiastic about this particular project The concept of a one man operation with a SparkFun account and soldering iron turning something from concept to commercially available product with no outside backing is definitely “exciting”. Add Project Excitebike to your RSS reader of choice if you are at all interested in the intersection of bit, atoms, and DIY thinking.

It look like the plan is to sell the product in kit form, be sure to sign up for updates!
