Aviary is attempting to recreate large portions of the Adobe Creative Suite as web based applications. The company is ambitious and the products are decent, but I’m most excited by the fact that they creates a series of books on how to use the software. The typical story is an “old media” company trying to salvage its business model by going digital, but the opposite can work too. Creating a physical artifact and selling it for more than it costs to make is a tried and true business model.
Aviary with their books, Boxee with their set top box/remote, and the dozens of companies that combine the web and physical production tools are early pioneers that are showing there is money to be made with hybrid offerings that combine the best of bits and atoms. Hopefully this is a trend that will continue to gain steam.
