Pixar pushes the envelope in technology and art with each new release. It also inspires creativity and technological exploration in its many fans. A couple fun projects have crossed my radar recently.
Michal Miszta, author of the awesome blog TheModelMaker.net has created an exceptionally detailed recreation of Carl and Ellie’s home from Disney/Pixar‘s Oscar nominated film “UP”.
Michal cut the pieces of the house on a laser cutter, note the tell tale burn marks on the edges of the wood pieces.
Once the pieces had been assembled, he painstakingly painted them to create a near perfect simulacra at 1:48 scale. It is a gorgeous product and a great use of a laser cutter.
The only criticism of the project I have is that he has not shared more of the process on his blog. How did he design the parts, paint them, etc. Hopefully he will share more in the future for this project and the other cool things he has cooking.
Louie Mantia, a designer at Apple and massive Disney/Pixar fan, snapped this picture of what looks like a 3D Printed Carl from UP. The dusty appearance and slightly faded colors are the hallmarks of the ZCorp 3D printing process and Pixar is a known customer. It is very exciting to see the 3D data from those films now being used to create physical artifacts.
